Rio Olympic champion Erica Wiebe dominated at the trials for the Commonwealth Games held at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. in November. Wiebe, who won a gold medal in last year’s summer Olympic Games in the 75 kg class, finished 1st in the 76 kg class at the trials. The 2016 Ottawa Sports Awards Female Athlete of the Year won all three of her matches. She beat former former teammate and Olympian Leah Ferguson in the final. The victory means Wiebe is provisionally qualified for the 21st Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia in 2018, where she’ll look to defend the gold medal she won at the games in 2014.
