In October, a Bells Corners street was renamed “Alison Korn Private” to honour the two-time Olympic rowing medallist from Ottawa.

Alongside a pile of World Cup medals and two World Championships gold, Korn won an silver medal in the women’s eight at the Atlanta 1996 Games and a bronze at Sydney 2000.
The 46-year-old has continued to make a big impact on the Canadian sports scene following her athletic career, now serving as media relations manager for the Canadian Paralympic Committee.
“I’m very honoured to be recognized as part of this initiative,” Korn said in a City of Ottawa announcement. “I’ve always been grateful and proud to have grown up in such a supportive community with so many opportunities.
“And now that I’m a sport parent myself, a community volunteer and working professional, I have even more understanding of and appreciation for all the contributions from teachers, coaches, volunteers, friends and family, who all helped me develop as an athlete and a person.
“Thanks to all of them and to the City for this honour.”
The street renaming recognition came as part of an initiative led by city councillors Rick Chiarelli and Diane Deans to honour local trailblazing women more aptly in local commemorations.
“Alison’s strength, determination, and drive are an inspiration for many young women in Ottawa,” Deans noted. “She is an excellent example of what our female athletes can achieve and I am proud that her name is being commemorated for future generations.”
“It is important that we commemorate her so that whenever children see and ask about the ‘Alison Korn’ street sign, they can learn about her accomplishments and her place in our history,” Chiarelli added.
