Athlete of the Month: Maxime Gratton

Team sports have been largely absent during the pandemic, but that hasn’t stopped Maxime Gratton from taking some big steps forward in developing his volleyball game. The Garneau high school grad had expected to make his university volleyball debut with the McMaster Marauders until COVID KO’ed Canadian varsity sports. But instead the Ottawa Maverick Volleyball Club product has joined Volleyball Canada’s National Excellence Program in a bubble environment at Centre sportif de Gatineau. Gratton, who’s managed juvenile diabetes for the past decade, has represented Canada with the junior national team and would like to one day join the senior men, like his father Paul did from 1978-1985.

Teams of the Month: Ottawa Ice/Lady 67’s U13 & U15 Girls’ Hockey Teams

With no games and limited icetime for modified practices with small cohorts of players, it’s been a difficult year for hockey-hungry members of the Ottawa Girls Hockey Association. But members of the Ottawa Ice U13 and Lady 67’s U15 squads recognized that many other families in the community have endured even greater challenges, and stepped up to support organizations devoted to helping those in need. That included rounding up donations and non-perishable goods for the Ottawa Food Bank; collecting mitts, hats, socks, masks and stocking stuffers for teens at Operation Come Home; and stuffing a trunk full of toys for Toy Mountain.
