CARLETON RAVENS E-SPORT TEAM TO COMPETE IN PROVINCIAL LEAGUE
With Ontario university athletics cancelled for the fall season, post-secondary esports is looking to fill the void. The Carleton Ravens are the founding members of a new student-run league, and will compete in all four tournaments being offered: Overwatch, Rocket League, Hearthstone and League of Legends. The regular season begins in October, with playoffs happening in March. A total of $24,000 in scholarships is being offered as prize money.
RCC TO HOST 2021 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Canoe Kayak Canada has awarded the Rideau Canoe Club hosting duties for the 2021 Canadian Sprint Canoe Kayak Championships. The club was originally supposed to host the 2020 championships, which were cancelled due to COVID-19. The 2021 event will take place August 24 to 29, 2021.
OSU BEGINS PLSQ SEASON
Ottawa South United’s Premiere ligue de soccer du Quebec season has begun on both the men’s and women’s sides. The men’s team tied CS St-Hubert 2-2 on August 9 and also tied their second game against AS Blainville 1-1. The women have lost the first four games of their season. This is the first time OSU has been part of the PLSQ, after switching over from League1 Ontario in order to reduce travel times. Both leagues are in the second-highest tier for Canadian soccer, after the Canadian Premier League (CPL).
ATLÉTICO OTTAWA MAKES ITS DEBUT
Atlético Ottawa’s first game in franchise history ended in a 2-2 tie to York9 FC on August 15. The Atlético Madrid-backed team was supposed to start its season in April, but due to COVID-19 is instead participating in the CPL’s Island Games bubble tournament in Charlottetown.
Two Ottawa natives are on the team: Antoine Coupland, who has played for the Ottawa Fury and St. Anthony SC, and Matteo de Brienne, who spent time with OSU as well as the Vancouver Whitecaps residency program. At 16 and 18 respectively, they are also the two youngest players on the team.
Bishop-Nriagu stars at Lions twilight series
The Ottawa Lions Track-and-Field Club brought running competition back to the capital with a truncated version of its annual summer twilight series.
The meets drew several participants who might have been competing at the Tokyo Games if not for the COVID-19 pandemic, including local Rio 2016 Olympians Farah Jacques and 800-metre Melissa Bishop-Nriagu, who posted a 56.77-second 400 m clocking at the Aug. 12 meet.

Competing on the eve of his 43rd birthday, 5-time Paralympic medallist Jason Dunkerley was just over 1 minute off the personal-best time that earned him a silver medal in the men’s 5,000 metres at the London 2012 Games 9 years earlier, clocking 16:39.74 at the Aug. 15 twilight.
