Ottawans showed their mettle at the provincial lawn bowling championships this year. Across disciplines, bowlers from Nepean, Galetta, Elmdale and other clubs have proved their skill, talent and mental determination, overcoming some heartbreaking losses to achieve great results.

Ottawans came very close to the top of the podium: Nepean’s Jake Schuknecht came 2nd in men’s singles, and represented Ontario at the 2019 Canadian Championships for lawn bowling. At provincials, Schuknecht had a heartbreaking round three loss to eventual tournament winner Vince Donohue, before winning his last two games for the silver.

At the Canadian championships held at the end of August, Schuknecht lost out of the tournament in a match that would have sent him to the national quarterfinals.

Nepean’s trio of Rosalie Parsons-Brown, Sandra Jefferies, and Cheryl McBain similarly had to battle for their silver medals. They started their round robin games with a tough 17-3 loss to Milton, and fought to end their round robin with a 2-3 record, which placed them third in their group.  In the quarterfinals, they returned the favour to Milton by beating the team 16-14.

Ottawans’ issue of so close so far also hit the pairs team from the city this season. The men’s duo of Dave Jefferies and John Wilson from Galetta went 3-0 all the way to the gold medal match. They lost 23-12 in the finals to Woodstock, then lost the ensuing silver medal qualifier to Windsor 22-18.
