In their single season appearance in Toronto’s Soccer Academy Alliance Canada league, the U16 boys team of the Futuro Soccer Academy showcased exceptional talent against the bigger market teams, placing 2nd in the league by losing to the FC Durham Academy by 3-1 in the championship game for the league title.

The team’s coach, Carlos Aviles, said the team needed a new challenge, and the SAAC league was where they found it. “We wanted to try something new, to face some new teams, and that challenge itself was great,” Aviles said. “It was a great experience.”

Aviles said his goal for the team was placing in the top 3. The team was also the league’s spring champion, finishing with an undefeated 8-0 record which qualified them for the Academy Cup championship. In the fall league they finished with a record of 5-4.

“I think we gained a lot of experience not only as a team but also as caliber of players. I think we were challenged in many ways as a team, as individuals and as I know obviously, as a coach,” Aviles added.

“Any kind of team that you play in Toronto – no matter what level – is always going to be great competition for Ottawa teams.”
