Local soccer players win friendlies with Canada, Gloucester takes bronze at nationals

Ottawa South United product Kris Twardek scored the winning goal in a 2-1 road victory over Honduras for the Canadian men’s under-20 soccer team in its first of two friendlies on Nov. 12.

“They’re the best team in Central America at the moment, so I think it was good for the team to get a result,” Twardek said in a Soccer Canada interview. “It’s hot here. We’re ready for the climate now, and I think it gives us a bit of momentum and confidence going into the (CONCACAF U20 World Cup) qualifiers in February.”

Dressing for the Canadian men’s U17 team, Ottawa Internationals players Jonathan David and Benson Fazili won back-to-back friendlies against Jamaica on the road Nov. 27 and 29.

The Gloucester Celtic senior men’s amateur soccer team placed 3rd at the Oct. 5-10 Sport Chek National Championships Challenge Trophy finals in St. John’s, Nfld.

The Celtic knocked off the Manitoba representatives 4-0, PEI 4-1 and Newfoundland 6-1 to reach the semi-finals before falling 1-0 to Quebec and then rebounding for a 5-4 win over Saskatchewan to claim bronze. B

Ezick Evraire was the tournament-leading scorer with 7 goals in 5 games. The 2013 national champs earlier won their second Ontario Cup in 4 years.
