Chartrand shoots into 2nd at season-opening international skating event

Alaine Chartrand of the Nepean Skating Club earned a silver medal in her first international event of 2016-2017 at the Sept. 28-Oct. 1 Autumn Classic International in Montreal.

The reigning women’s national champion posted the best free skate score out all competitors to shoot her way up from the standings from 6th after the short program.

“To have a long program like this at my first international this season is a really good starting place,’” Chartrand said in a Skate Canada media release. “It’ll only get better. I felt in both programs I really attacked everything and I kept that fighting attitude all the way through.”

Christian Reekie of the Gloucester Skating Club and past Minto Skating Club athlete Hannah Dawson made their pairs international debut for Canada at an ISU Junior Grand Prix event Sept. 28-Oct. 2 in Estonia.

Partners as of only this summer, the local pair were the top Canadians and 9th overall.
