Y I’m Running the Y Kids Marathon in May’ video contest launched

Submitted by Ottawa Race Weekend

Building on its commitment to encourage kids to get and stay active, the Tamarack Homes Ottawa Race Weekend is today launching the “Y I’m Running the Y Kids Marathon in May” video contest to add some additional fun to its Y Kids Marathon event held on Sunday, May 27.

The Y Kids Marathon is held annually for students between grades 3 and 8. Once they register, they are required to perform one-half hour of exercise on a regular basis leading up to race day. This half-hour of exercise is equivalent to one kilometer.

Using a tracker sheet, participants log 41 km of exercise – whether it is running, basketball, soccer, or a related activity. On race day, they complete the remaining 1.195 km to make up the full marathon distance. Students also collect pledges for charity.

Every registered participant in the Y Kids Marathon is eligible to enter the “Y I’m Running the Y Kids Marathon in May” video contest. The contest begins May 9 and ends May 21, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. EDT. All participants are required to do is prepare a brief video (two minutes or less) describing:

  • Why they are participating in the 2012 Y Kids Marathon
  • What activities or sports they participated in and included on their tracker sheet
  • Why kids their age should participate in next year’s Y Kids Marathon
  • Which charity they are donating their pledges to

Once their video is prepared, participants post it to YouTube and fill out a contest entry form. Kids are then encouraged to tell family and friends to view their video, as the video with the most views at the close of the contest wins.

Contest gifts and prizes are courtesy of the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region. Each contest participant will receive a one-week family core membership to the Y. The contest winner gets one free week at camp or regional day camp. Visit the contest webpage for more information.
