Franco-Cité advances to OFSAA boys\’ volleyball final’,’

The Franco-Cité Faucons are off to the OFSAA \’AA\’ boys\’ volleyball championship final where they have a date with the five-time defending provincial champions from Eden Secondary School in St. Catharines.

It\’s been smooth sailing for Franco-Cité up to this point, having dropped only one set at the Nov. 24-26 competition in Stratford. The Faucons dropped a 26-24 game to Norwell, but won 15-9 in the third to give them a perfect pool play record thanks to other victories over Ridgeway, Timiskaming and Clarke.

Faucons star Patrick Goulet led the tournament with 36 kills in the round robin portion of the tournament.

Franco-Cité edged Essex in each game of a three-set victory 26-24, 27-25 and 25-21 in the quarter-final round and then handled Madill a straight-sets defeat to advance to the 5 p.m. final.

The Glebe Gryphons couldn\’t have come much closer to the advancing to the playoff round at the \’AAAA\’ championships in Hamilton as they wound up on the wrong side of a tiebreaker with Brampton Centennial and Cardinal Newman for the final position.

Glebe beat Cardinal Newman 25-22, 25-22 but lost its other two matches to Brampton and top-ranked Holy Names, both by the painful minimum, 30-28.

The Gryphons then fell to Georgetown on the consolation side of the event.
Bronze-medallists last year, the Béatrice-Desloges Bulldogs couldn\’t repeat their performance at the \’AAA\’ championships in Hamilton, winning just one of their four pool matches. B-D beat Waterloo-Oxford, but dropped three-setters to Kingston CVI and Applewood Heights as well a straight-set defeat to Milton.

Colonel By would give Glebe a run for their money in the most heart-aching tale category, however. The Cougars fell 15-13 in the deciding set of their contest with top-ranked Upper Canada College, which would given them a trip to the \’AAA\’ championship playoff round thanks to straight-set wins over Maple and Bishop Ryan in Hamilton.

Redeemer Christian finished fourth in its pool at the 20-team \’A” championships, recording a win over Stayner and losses to Woodland Christian, Manitoulin and Marc Garneau. Toronto District Christian knocked Redeemer from the tournament with a 25-17, 25-22 consolation round win.
