Faucons take silver with 15-13 5th set loss

The Franco-Cité Faucons could not have possibly come any closer to an OFSAA ‘AA’ boys’ volleyball championship this past weekend in Stratford, falling by the minimum two points in the fifth set to Eden Secondary School, who have now captured six consecutive provincial titles.

“We were right there, but we just didn’t have the last breaks and that’s how the game goes sometimes,” says Faucons coach Thierry Lavigne, whose squad fell for the first time in the tournament, 23-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-17, 13-15. “The guys are pretty competitive and they’re winners, so to come out on the short end of the stick was a bit sour.

“But after that, you take a little step back and you see how great of a season we had.”

Franco-Cité won six previous games, dropping just one set, en route to the provincial final.

The Colonel By Cougars rebounded from a narrow two-point defeat that cost them a place in the ‘AAA’ championship playoff round by tiebreaker to win the Hamilton event’s consolation final.

The Cougars prevailed 17-25, 25-21, 15-13 over Bishop Ryan to finish the tournament with a 4-2 record.
