Eastern Ontario Sectionals results

Minto and host Gloucester were the dominant clubs at the Eastern Ontario Sectionals this past weekend as Ottawa figure skaters were all over the podium in most categories, while the fourth-place finishers in the older categories also earned a trip to Skate Canada\’s Challenge at the end of November in Regina.

Gloucester\’s Elizabeth Comeau moved up from third place after the short program to edge Minto\’s Anna McCorriston by .71 points to win the junior women\’s competition with a score of 104.69, while Gloucester\’s Jennifer Pettem won bronze.

Local competitors earned all four Challenge qualifying positions in the novice women\’s event.

Minto\’s Zoe Gong was the class of the field with 93.28 points, just ahead of Gloucester\’s Nikki Mattocks, whose standout free skate helped her to silver. Lisa Nasu-Yu, representing Minto, took third, while Gloucester\’s Kelsey MacLean earned fourth.

Gloucester\’s Sonia Tang, a top contender in the category, had to withdraw before the event due to an Achilles tendon injury suffered in training.

The Rideau/Minto duo of Samantha Glavine and Jeff Hough won the novice dance title with a score of 79.74 points, while Hough also picked up a silver medal in the novice men\’s category just ahead of Minto counterpart Ian Gibson in the bronze medal position, with Glen Cairn\’s Patrick Sachsalber in fourth. Minto\’s Cassandre Lapierre and Malcolm Jones earned the silver in novice dance.

Rideau\’s Andriyko Goyaniuk topped the pre-novice men\’s field, ahead of Gloucester\’s Josh Allen and Minto competitors Hugh Brabyn-Jones and Cameron Hines in second through fourth place.

Minto produced a remarkable sweep of the top eight positions in the pre-novice women\’s event, with Sophie Fu, Sheena Hardwick-Kelly, Analisa Love-Tedjoutomo and Morgan McMillan occupying the top four spots.

Brooklyn McCormick of Glen Cairn was the top finisher from Ottawa in pre-juvenile women, placing fourth, while Jon Kubelka and Johnathan Seck were second and third in pre-juvenile men.

Gloucester\’s Ben Guthrie scored 126.50 points in the senior men\’s competition, while Nepean\’s Alaine Chartrand topped the senior women\’s category.

Gloucester\’s Sarah and Steven Clarke took second in junior dance.

Gloucester\’s Hailey Fournier edged Minto\’s Alexis Dion to win the juvenile women\’s competition, and Gloucester\’s Phillipe McGuire was the first and only competitor in juvenile men.

Other unchallenged winners included Chelsea Sheridan and Alex Gunther of Gloucester and Goulbourn in juvenile dance, Vanessa Chartrand and Christian Reekie of Hull/Gloucester in pre-novice dance, and Minto\’s Hélène Létourneau and Kevin Boczar in senior dance.
