Disappointing OFSAA results for Ottawa girls\’ basketball teams

The Elmwood Eagles are the only team left standing at OFSAA girls\’ basketball championships across the province, and they\’re not playing in their first choice of finals.

Elmwood lost 37-28 to Fort Erie in its opening match of the \’A\’ tournament in St. Catharines and then were dispatched to the consolation round by host Ridley College.

The Eagles rebounded to beat Kapuskasing 33-23 and then knocked off Runnymede 43-27 to reach the consolation finals. Megan Singh scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Elmwood in the consolation semi.

A low seventh seed did nothing to upset the Louis-Riel Rebelles as they trounced Dr. John Denison in their opening match 55-29, but a 38-34 defeat to Thousand Islands Secondary School put an end to their hopes of a third consecutive OFSAA \’AAA\’ title.

The Rebelles beat St. Basil 68-45 but then wound up with an early trip home from Kingston by falling to Huntsville 48-43. Catherine Traer was the game-high scorer in each contest, registering 13, 14, 15 and 22 points.

It was a rough start and finish to the \’AA\’ championships in Belleville for the St. Matthew Tigers, who trailed 10-1 against Barrie Central after the first quarter of their first match. The Tigers lost that contest 40-30 and then lost by the same 10-point margin against La Salle to fall to the consolation side of the draw where St. Joseph\’s knocked them from the tournament 45-36.

Glebe didn\’t have much better luck as the lowest seeds at the \’AAAA\’ championships in Windsor, falling 42-17 to Pickering and 66-34 to top-ranked St. Thomas More before St. Edmond Campion sent them back home with a 47-22 loss.
