The University of Ottawa women’s basketball team opened the 2011-2012 season with a victory over McGill University in Montreal Thursday night.
Although the OUA regular season doesn’t get underway until the second week of November, last night’s game was an exhibition matchup of two teams expected to be in the top 6-7 teams in the country this year.
The McGill Martlets are coming off a great season that saw them finish first place in the Quebec Conference with a 13-3 record, but the year ended badly with a collapse in the first round of the playoffs and a loss to Laval.
With the entire team returning and a great recruiting year, McGill is favoured to win the Quebec conference championship this year.
The game was tied at 15-15 at the end of the first quarter and 33-33 at halftime. It was a real seesaw affair with McGill clinging to a slim 47-46 after three-quarters of play.
However, the Gee-Gees came out flying in the final quarter outscoring the Martlets 21-12 to win by a score of 67-59.
Ottawa U’s Jenna Gilbert scored a game-high 19 points, going 7-for-13 from the floor and 5-10 from 3-point range. Kellie Ring scored 12 points in her first CIS game and also added four assists and seven rebounds. Bess Lennox chipped in 11 points to go along with her seven rebounds and Hannah Sunley Paisley added 12 points.
