St. Mike’s overwhelms Ashbury in Colts’ CISAA debut

It wasn’t the homecoming the Ashbury Colts had dreamed of in their first match in the CISAA independent schools’ league in around half a century yesterday, as St. Michael’s College bombed away at the Colts’ secondary all day in a 54-26 rout in Rockcliffe.

“Obviously not what we’d planned for,” Ashbury coach Dwayne Smith said. “In the same breath, there are things we can get better at, and we’ll be better in a week’s time.”

Julien Moore and Benji Oppenheimer scored first-half touchdowns as Ashbury trailed only 21-14, but the Colts’ air attack went dormant while St. Mike’s passing game dominated with four consecutive majors to bring the game out of reach.

Quarterback Duncan Lurie rediscovered his connection with Oppenheimer late for a pair of touchdowns to bring the final score back to 54-26.
