Joanna Brown of the Bytown Storm placed sixth overall at the world junior triathlon championships in Beijing, China yesterday, while teammate Tristan Woodfine placed 22nd in the men’s event.
Brown was the reigning world junior bronze medalist in the event, but couldn’t match her success in the running portion this time around after a season where injuries didn’t allow her to run her regular volume for any two-week period.
The All Saints Catholic High School grad finished the bike portion of the race in the lead pack, but her 5 km run time, which was 41 seconds slower than last year put her 36 seconds behind the gold medalist.
Brown sent an e-mail to contacts back in Ottawa with the subject line, “fell twice but still in one piece” with a photo of her smiling with a cast over her wrist and a scrape on her cheek, but no further explanation.
SportsOttawa.com has not yet been able to reach Brown, who’s headed to Guelph University this fall, or coach Greg Kealey, although they are set to arrive back in Canada Tuesday. Look for an update in the coming days.
