June/July 2017 Athlete of the Month: Merissah Russell

Ottawa basketball player Merissah Russell scored a game-high 11 points in a 64-38 semi-final victory over Colombia to ensure Canada of a medal at the June 7-11 FIBA Americas U16 Women’s Championship in Argentina.

The 15-year-old Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School student started the tournament strong with a 15-point effort in a dominant win over Venezuela, then helped her team earn a 2018 U17 World Cup berth with another big win over Dominican Republic, followed by a 71-65 thriller over the host Argentines.

The past Ottawa Nationals Junior Elite League of Ontario all-star finished with a silver medal following a 91-46 defeat to USA in the final, again leading her team with a 12-point effort.
