Stittsville wrestler Erica Wiebe became Ottawa’s first summer Olympic champion since Glenroy Gilbert’s 4×100 m relay title at the Atlanta 1996 Games on Thursday in Rio de Janeiro.
The 27-year-old National Capital Wrestling Club alum controlled each of her four matches en route to the gold medal, recording victories over opponents from Germany, China, Belarus and Kazakhstan in the women’s 75 kg class.
“I’ve never had this much fun wrestling,” Wiebe said in an interview with CBC. “I love this sport and I never thought I’d be an Olympic champion, but today I had my best day and it’s amazing.”
