The nation’s capital will host the 2014 North American orienteering championships, it was announced last month. Over 100 athletes from overseas were amongst the 700+ who attended this year’s event in Pennsylvania.
“This will be a fantastic opportunity to show Ottawa how great the sport is and to show the world how great Ottawa is,” Ottawa Orienteering Club president Randy Kemp said in a news release.
The club’s young members put in a strong showing at the 2012 North American championships. Twelve-year-old Philipe Turcanu earned two gold medals in his category, the Williamson siblings earned plenty more – with 11-year-old Krista taking gold and bronze, 13-year-old Megan (2 silver, 1 bronze) and 15-year-old Eric (1 gold, 1 bronze) decorating themselves plentifully. Eric Kemp won bronze in the elite sprint race, while national junior team member Alex Bergstrom took silver in the middle distance event.
