Wild Major Bantams retain crown at Petes AAA tourney

–Submitted by Eastern Ontario Wild

For the 2nd straight season, this Eastern Ontario Wild AAA hockey team has been crowned Champions of the Peterborough Petes Bantam Icefest AAA Hockey Tournament.

The team got off to a slow start during round robin action within the field of 16 teams; however, quickly elevated their game once playoff action commenced by downing the: Kingston Jr. Frontenacs 3-2 (quarter finals); Toronto Titans 5-1 (semi finals); and, the Upper Canada Cyclones 4-1 (finals).

The championship game was an intense rematch between the same two teams that faced off against one an0ther in last year’s tournament final at the Minor Bantam AAA Division.  Just prior to the opening puck drop at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, head coach Steve Malette’s final words of motivation to the team were:

“The stars are lined up perfectly for us tonight.  We have the same player roster;  we had the same record after round robin action; we stayed at the same hotel; we are playing at the same rink; we are facing the same opponents in the finals; and, our player (Jeremy McFarlane) is injured as he was in last year’s tournament. With the same level of heart, determination and getting the puck to the net as we did last year, we will once again be successful!”

This is the Team’s 2nd tournament championship of the 2011/12 season. This Wild team currently sits atop of the OEMHL-AAA league in 1st place with a 12-2-0 record; and, is ranked 5th in the Province and 6th in Canada
