One point was all that kept Rachel Homan’s Ottawa Curling Club rink from its third consecutive Shorty Jenkins Classic title last weekend in Brockville.
The team of Homan, Emma Miskew, Alison Kreviazuk, and Lisa Weagle earned a perfect 5-0 record in the round-robin portion of the event, and then knocked off Jacqueline Harrison 8-4 in the semi-final to reach the championship game with their undefeated record intact.
Not much separated the defending Ontario champions from Sherry Middaugh’s rink in the final. Middaugh’s 2-0 advantage in the second end was the biggest lead of the match, which ended 4-3 and forced Team Homan to settle the runner-up position in their 2011-12 season debut.
“We finished in second place, but learned a lot from the weekend,” the Ottawa curlers wrote on their website.
The team adds that they’re looking forward to taking the ice soon at their home club to practice in advance of their next event on Oct. 7-10 in Calgary.
Homan won the last two Shorty Jenkins World Curling Tour events before this year, becoming the first repeat champion in Spiel’s history.
