Ottawa’s Bruno Lortie finished off his summer vacation in style by winning a silver medal in the men’s 18-and-under division at the Canadian beach volleyball championships at the end of August at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto.
Lortie, a Grade 12 Béatrice-Desloges high school student, paired up with Toronto’s Andrew Kocur, a Team Ontario indoor volleyball teammate, for the competition.
Lortie and Kocur got out of the gates slowly with a 1-3 in Day 1 pool play, but battled back to win their next three matches the following day – including one struggle that they pulled out 24-22 in the third – to qualify for championship playoff round.
They beat a fellow Ontario team in another three-setter to advance through round of 16, knocked off a second Ontario rival in the quarter-finals, and then pulled off a 21-19, 23-21 victory over a B.C. opponent in the semis before falling to the Ontario May/Coleman pair in the gold medal final.
Lortie grew up with the Maverick Volleyball Club and played for the Ottawa Fusion club last season. The 2010-2011 national capital high school volleyball silver medalist will play his final year of youth indoor volleyball this season and is sure to attract loads of interest from university teams, including the Université Laval Rouge et Or, where his older brother Jérémie plays.
